AN ABERYSTWYTH primary school has been awarded a green flag after achieving the highest level of eco-friendliness.

Plascrug School has been an Eco-School for more than 10 years but was recently awarded Platinum status by the Eco-Schools programme in recognition of all the school does for the environment.

Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a simple framework to help make sustainability an integral part of school life by enhancing the curriculum and getting the whole school united behind something important.

Moira Morris, a Year 5 teacher at the school, said the award was testament to the hard work of pupils and staff.

She said: “We do several things here at the school, including garden activities and keeping a check on the health aspect such as walking or scooting to school.

“The pupils are always involved and each class will have one or two representatives.

“We also keep a record of how much recycling material and how much black bag waste we use, and set targets. We are tight with electricity by turning off appliances and we have solar panels on the roof.

“Another aspect is water, which we try and conserve, despite us having plenty of it with all the rain.”
