LLANIDLOES Primary School has landed a Platinum Eco Schools Award from the Keep Wales Tidy group.

This award reflects 12 years of pupils’ achievements in developing awareness of the planet across a range of key areas.

As part of the programme, water has been saved at the school thanks to new taps, the school grounds have been developed, including a grass habitat and orchard created by the pupils.

Transport awareness has been covered in classwork and a cycling proficiency scheme has been backed.

Many aspects of daily school life help reduce waste and energy.

Pupils recycle pens, paper, plastic, fruit snack waste. Each class has a monitor to switch off lights when possible. And staff use fairtrade products in the staff room.

The eco committee meet in their own break times and plan events for the school. These include school assemblies, recently about litter.

They also support the work on environmental charities such as the Marine Conservation Society and the Size of Wales environment charity.

The committee also have a representative from the governing body, lunchtime staff and teaching staff.

One mission is to eliminate litter from the community.

The pupils carry out litter picks in school and one pupil has been inspired to collect litter on the way to school.
