Madam,

The claims by the economy and transport secretary Ken Skates that free wifi on Arriva Trains in and out of Aberystwyth and on the Cambrian Coast Line will be a boon for customers and business and contribute to a growing economy (22 February) will seem very far-fetched to anyone who has used the very limited wifi provided by Arriva Trains.

You can only surf at full speed for the first 21MB of data which on most modern laptops is barely enough to open your email, let alone do any work. After the first 21MB users are only offered a restricted service which is not adequate for business purposes.

While I can understand the need to ensure that bandwidth is not used wastefully, the attitude of Arriva Trains in managing the wifi is outdated and excessively pennypinching.

I am a regular traveller on Aberystwyth trains who frequently needs to work the train, and I find it is better to use my phone data connection than rely on the poor quality wifi offered by Arriva Trains.

There are many other problems with the carriages on the Aberystwyth line which needed to be fixed before wifi was installed.

The most pressing is the disgusting condition of the toilets on all Arriva trains.

The £1.5 million spent on an indifferent wifi service would have been better spent on providing some decent and usable toilets.

Yours etc,

Dr Andrew Prescott,
