OVER £2,800 has now been raised to help a football club pay for damage caused by Storm Christoph.
A JustGiving page was set up to help Porthmadog Football Club after flood water damaged the clubhouse and changing rooms.
Organisers have set a target of £5,000 and, so far, £2,827 has been raised.
Club chairman Phil Jones said the response to the appeal “has been great”.
“Pikes newsagents have a bucket in the shop for people to donate and we have had lots of our loyal supporters from all over giving donations on the JustGiving page," he said. "It’s very heartening to see the support.”
The club had to turn to the public for help because their insurance does not cover flood damage.
Explaining what the money will be used for, Phil said: “We want to raise the floor of certain areas such as the tractor shed. We would probably need to raise these another 600 millimetres and it’s already raised off the ground, this shows how much water came in.
“We need floodgates on as many of the doors as possible, but we have 11 or 12 external doors and these floodgates can cost up to £900 each. It will be a case of seeing to the most important ones first.”
Volunteers had recently refurbished the changing rooms and Phil said the damage was “disheartening. I’ve been chairman for 20 years and this is the worst flooding I’ve ever seen in that time. People in the area said that it was the worst flooding they have ever seen in their lifetimes.”
