THE future of a popular Lampeter playground remains unclear after town councillors expressed strong reservations about whether they could pay for essential maintenance.
And they appear to be on a collision course with Tai Ceredigion housing association over who should foot the overall bill for Maesyfelin Park.
Tai Ceredigion had invited Lampeter Town Council to take over the play area – but a report by independent experts suggests it could cost £3,000 to £4,000 to bring its play equipment up to scratch.
Councillors are now calling on the housing association to raise the park to the required standard before they take it over.
“This is taxpayers’ money we’re talking about and we would have to justify spending a large amount of that cash,” Cllr Chris Thomas told the Cambrian News.
“My view is that we should take the park on, but if we enter into a legal contact with Tai Ceredigion we would be liable for every penny.”
The housing association initially approached the council after criticism from residents who objected to paying for the park’s upkeep.
