THE future of Aberystwyth’s popular paddling pool has been cast in serious doubt after it emerged it could cost £60,000 to repair.
As schoolchildren broke up for their summer holidays last week, the Cambrian News has learned that the promenade’s paddling pool could be closed for the foreseeable future due to concerns over the structure supporting it.
Local businesses are said to be concerned that the council will not carry out repairs this summer, with one businessman claiming the council “want to get rid of it”.
Basil Coates, owner of GB Fishing, on Corporation Street, told the Cambrian News this week: “I understand the costs of repairs would be £60,000, and now it has been kicked into the long grass.
“I think the paddling pool has been [structurally] undermined. But if it is that dangerous, why did they have a digger on there digging two holes in the paddling pool? It is becoming derelict.
“It brings kids and families to the town – it is a real attraction. It is going to affect local trade if it is closed.
“I’m sure we can build a new one for that money. But I am calling on the council to get it repaired as soon as possible. We need the paddling pool.”
A council spokesperson said: “Ceredigion County Council recognises the importance of the paddling pool to the town and has no desire to remove the pool.
“We are currently exploring options for its repair – the damage is structural which may involve a total rebuild of the area and is likely to be costly.
“Whatever options are considered there is no budget currently available or identified for this project, therefore the pool is unlikely to be open this summer.”
