CALLS are being made for members of the public to be on the lookout for crimes against wildlife and report suspicious behaviour to the police.
As part of the Parliamentary Police Scheme, Liz Saville Roberts, the MP for Dwyfor Meirionnydd spent the day on the beat with PC Dewi Evans from North Wales Police’s Rural Crime Team whose responsibilities include: investigating farming crimes, wildlife and environmental crime, theft of livestock and crimes targeted specifically at rural communities, mostly in south Gwynedd.
Mrs Saville Roberts said: “We were called out to an incident in Pontllyfni where a badger had been attacked by what appeared to be a metal rod and then savaged by a dog. The incident had been reported by a local couple who’d heard the commotion.
“Sadly, this sort of thing happens all too often across rural north Wales.
“I appreciate people might be instinctively afraid of informing on these criminals but this is what the Rural Crime Team are here for. These people must be stopped, so let the police know.
“I’d therefore urge the public to make use of this specialist service and contact the Rural Crime Team on 101 if they suspect a crime has been committed. The team are ready and willing to help.”
