Pupils at St Padarn’s Primary School in Aberystwyth have taken seriously the 2016 State of Nature Report which records that one in 14 species in Wales are headed for extinction.

Year 5 pupils are taking matters into their own hands and organising their own Bioblitz, noting all species of animals and plants within the school grounds.

“It is vital that we record what is present today so that we can monitor numbers and see which species are declining and need our help,” said a 10-year-old member of the school’s eco council.

“By recording species and sending our results to the West Wales Biodiversity Information Centre our records will be stored permanently in a database and will be of help to scientists now and in the future.”

The pupils are being helped to identify moth species by expert recorders Tony Allenby, Ina Smith and Simon Cox. For mosses, liverworts and hornworts, Tom Ottley has been helping pupils.

The enthusiastic Year 5 pupils are very ecologically minded and have also helped with Fair Trade sales, stopping waste and various recycling initiatives.

They are appealing to all Cambrian News readers to record their wildlife sightings by going to wwbic.org.uk/wildlife-recording
