A MEIRIONNYDD slate quarry and its importance in the Second World War will be explored in a new S4C documentary.
Communities all over Wales are home to fascinating secrets, strange tales and mythical stories that are worth telling time and time again.
In a new series, Cynefin, beginning on S4C on Sunday evening, 7 January, viewers will be given a more detailed glimpse of eight areas across Wales and the opportunity to gain a better understanding of what makes them unique communities.
Each week the presenter, Heledd Cynwal, will enjoy the company of local characters who will guide her through the area’s hidden nooks and crannies while archaeologist Iestyn Jones will delve into the history that has helped define the area in question.
Siôn Tomos Owen will also join the team to investigate the local myths and folk tales that have become integral parts of the lives of Welsh communities.
The eight areas in the spotlight will be Bro Ffestiniog, Bro Emlyn, Merthyr Tydfil, Vale of Clwyd , Holy Island and west Anglesey, Banw Valley, Amman Valley and Bala (Bro Tegid) and according to the presenter Heledd Cynwal they all offer treasures galore.
“Given that we are a small country, I thought I would have heard all the stories from the different parts of Wales,” she said.
“But as we filmed the series I soon realised that there are still hidden secrets and that there is so much more to appreciate and enjoy in our communities.”
During the visit to the Ffestiniog area, viewers will be given a rare insight into a part of the Blaenau Ffestiniog quarry that has not been seen by many.
Heledd said: “One of the most memorable experiences for me was to have access to the area that provided a safe haven for some of the nation’s treasures during the Second World War.
“Seeing the room, which had not changed since that time, as well as the remains of the pictures on the walls still evident, was a thrilling experience and one that I will cherish for a very long time.”
Join Heledd, Iestyn and Siôn every Sunday evening for eight weeks beginning on Sunday, 7 January at 8pm as they take us on a journey around our local communities.
