Madam,
Pwllheli’s struggling marina, once the ‘jewel in the crown’ of marinas in Wales, is now under the management of Cyngor Gwynedd - a struggling facility in urgent need of refurbishment.
One serious issue is dredging. The initial model at the time of building was said to be self-flushing. The real experts, the local harbour users, knew this would never happen, so here we are.
With berth holders abandoning the facility, Cyngor Gwynedd is now discussing the possibility of the marina being leased to a private company.
Why did Cyngor Gwynedd think it could manage the marina in the first place? They are council civil servants not experts in running a marina.
Now let us look at Plas Heli Ltd. It is a stand-alone company, inextricably linked to Hafan Pwllheli. Built at a cost of £9m, this architectural monstrosity may also be in need of scrutiny by the education and economic committee.
From 2012/13 to 2017/18 it has received £108,399 in various grants, including a loan in 2017/18 from Cyngor Gwynedd for £75,000. When did Cyngor Gwynedd become a bank?
How many more grants does this stand-alone limited company need in order to stay afloat? Ratepayers could be looking at a five per cent increase in council tax this year.
How much of this proposed increase will be used on Hafan Pwllheli and Plas Heli? Ratepayers must ask the questions.
Yours etc,
Alan Wilson, Pwllheli.
