Madam,

With the plans for Welsh-language-only enterprise zones, Simon Brookes wants to return Wales to the medieval patchwork quilt of ‘Welshries’ and ‘Englishries’.

In parts of Wales, not just Gwynedd, the idea of maximising the usage of Welsh makes perfect sense when it comes to translation of literary texts and historical documents. But if I want a house built, for example, I will look for the best builder in town.

Turning Mr Brookes’ argument on its head, supposing I was to argue for English-language-only enterprise zones, the evident discrimination against first-language Welsh speakers would be deemed unacceptable – and rightly so. Does Mr Brookes want to concentrate Welshness in Gwynedd? If so, his project runs counter to any aspiration to increase use of Welsh throughout Wales.

Yours etc,

Quentin Deakin, Tywyn.
