THE annual Race the Train event in Tywyn will go ahead this year despite a lack of volunteers.
The event, where hundreds of runners attempt to beat a Talyllyn steam engine in a 14-mile cross country race, will take place on Saturday, 18 August, celebrating the 35th occasion the gruelling timetrial has occurred.
Over 1,800 runners participated in the Rotary Club event in 2017, and it is believed the race pumps £1m into the local economy.
George Watson, who formerly was the race organiser for over a decade, stepped down from the role last year after expressing his concern that the future of the race was unsustainable as many of the volunteers responsible for organising the event were elderly and not enough younger volunteers were taking responsibility.
In the absence of volunteers to fill the position, Nancy Clarke, president of the Rotary Club of Tywyn and vice chair of Tywyn Town Council, has stepped in as race coordinator.
“I would like to express my thanks to those who have already approached me about the event for the patience, understanding and assistance given to date,” she said.
“I would also welcome anyone who would like to be involved with the event on a voluntary basis to get in touch."
For more information, or to volunteer, email [email protected] or speak to Nancy.
