COUNCIL chiefs have admitted they have scrapped funding for cheaper railcards for pensioners and disabled people as a way of saving money.

Before April this year, Ceredigion County Council had provided a 50 per cent reimbursement on the cost of a senior or disabled person’s railcard.

The council face mounting funding problems after seeing funding from the Welsh Government cut.

They said: “From 1 April 2016, Ceredigion County Council withdrew the provision that offered a reimbursement of 50 per cent off the purchase price for senior and disabled persons railcards.

“Due to the financial challenges the authority is facing, it was no longer deemed possible to maintain the provision which effectively subsidised the purchase of a discount card.

Various railcards continue to be available and offer substantial savings for those wanting to travel by train.”
