MORE than 200 walkers took part in the Ramblers Cymru Big Welsh Walk in Ceredigion on Saturday,

Walkers descended on Devil’s Bridge from as far afield as Holyhead, Warrington, Solihull and London, aged between nine and 79.

Director of Ramblers Cymru, Angela Charlton, said: “We were delighted with the turnout on Saturday. Everyone had a great day out, walking and meeting new people.

“Interestingly, the most popular of the four trails we organised was the longest – the 15-mile challenge.

“The money raised from all the generous participants in all the walks will go towards maintaining our extensive network of footpaths, so that these trails will be open for all to enjoy for generations to come.”

Four separate trails, ranging between two and 15 miles, took walkers through stunning scenery near Devil’s Bridge/Pontarfynach, the area made famous by the S4C detective series, Hinterland.

The walk challenges, supported by the People’s Postcode Lottery, were: Woodland Walk – two miles – along quiet country lanes, and visiting a beautiful community-run woodland; King Offa’s Challenge – six miles – walking along a tranquil river valley and involving a gradual ascent and lovely views; Mary Jones’s Challenge – 10 miles – taking in a glorious river valley, and attractive forest trails, bridleways and footpaths; and Owain Glyndwr’s Challenge – 15 miles – combining spectacular open moorland, forest trails and a serene river valley.

The Big Welsh Walk was supported by Brecon Mountain Rescue Team.
