Madam,
At the recent meeting on 3 July, in Fairbourne Village hall, to discuss the proposed closure of two village toilets, the matter of the seriously dangerous and broken ramp came up in discussion. This is our only safe access to our lovely beach – used by residents and visitors alike.
The problem has been known about for months and could have been dealt with, but it seems, once again, the needs of Fairbourne are a low priority for the council and those responsible for the management of certain facilities. We are told ‘there isn’t any money’ and that ‘we tried but couldn’t get a vehicle along the road in order to remove the broken concrete’, etc.
Now we are only two weeks away from the six-week school holidays when, on good days, all our visitors want to do is to spend the day making the most of the safe sea and clean beach, enjoying their respite from towns and busy lives.
I would like to challenge Barry Davies to come to Fairbourne and try accessing the beach carrying a couple of folding chairs and a picnic basket and/or pram or pushchair with a couple of toddlers, a canoe or windbreak. The need is now urgent if we are to keep our visitors coming, bringing much-needed revenue and avoid possible accidents.
For myself, I have spent countless hours of enjoyment on the beach here. I learnt to swim here and with the help of the ramp was able to do so until my 90th year. I could still get to the beach using a couple of sticks – am I now to be denied that simple pleasure, together with other older folk, in my last years?
Yours etc,
Joyce Currie, Heol Seithendre, Fairbourne.
