THE Cambrian News came to the aid of a Tywyn campaigner who was accusing Gwynedd Council of not doing enough to assist the town’s recycling efforts.

Outraged John Hazzlewood sent a strongly-worded letter to the Cambrian News requesting the newspaper’s assistance in helping the “powerless” people of Tywyn.

According to Mr Hazzlewood, the two recycling bins located in the rear car park of the Bro Dysynni Leisure Centre are frequently overflowing with waste and had “not been emptied for many weeks”.

He said: “I have phoned the correct number three times and I’ve been told they will see to it. No result.

“I have called the leisure centre, where the receptionist is weary of having people call. She has had no better success.

“I have spoken to a person connected with Tywyn Council, who I was sure would achieve what is needed. No better effect.

“I hope this letter will perhaps inspire many residents to write and phone their own protests through to the council, something must be done.

“Refuse collection is perhaps one item we really notice when it fails and services behind the leisure centre have failed frequently over the last two years.”

Mr Hazzlewood proposed installing a new bin on the premises to ensure the problem does not continue.

And after the Cambrian News took up his case, the bins were emptied and a third one added to the site.

A Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of the comments presented regarding the paper banks near the Bro Dysynni Leisure Centre, and can confirm that they will be emptied in the coming days.”
