Madam,
We welcome the debate about the future of Eldon Square initiated by Cllr Ywain Myfyr (Cambrian News, 15 June). We agree with your correspondent Margaret Hall (Letters, 22 June) that banning all vehicles from Eldon Square would not be practicable. However, it should be possible to develop a solution that relocates the bus station close to the town centre, increases pedestrian and restaurant/café seating areas, keeps traffic moving and provides for a bus stopping point and car parking within Eldon square.
We have consulted with businesses in and around Eldon Square and all responses are in favour of the proposal to relocate the bus station.
The current situation represents a danger to health and safety through pollution and the risk of accidents and adversely affects businesses that often find their premises used as ad hoc bus shelters. We therefore wish to support Cllr Myfyr in his efforts to make this change happen and our only proviso would be that this should not be seen as a five to 10-year plan, but is something that is needed right now.
Dolgellau is becoming increasingly popular as a destination for visitors to North Wales as a result of the efforts of the business community.
Recent publicity generated by the Theresa May visit, the filming of ‘Requiem’ and an increasingly busy calendar of local events is helping to build on this success.
However, we still need infrastructure and other improvements to help regenerate the town and ensure that Welsh language and culture is supported by full employment and affordable housing.
Discover Dolgellau will work in partnership with the council and local community groups in Dolgellau and with other communities in the area to help achieve these aims.
Yours etc, Llinos Rowlands, Acting chair, Discover Dolgellau.
