A passer-by who dragged a drowning woman from her submerged car on a flooded road near Lampeter has received a national police bravery award.
Arwel Morgan was presented with a silver award at the National Police Chiefs’ Council Police Public Bravery Awards, an event which recognises exceptional acts in exceptional circumstances.
Following a crash at Pencarreg in January 2018 which resulted in a car veering off the road and overturning only to be submerged in flood water, Mr Morgan entered the cold water without hesitation and managed to remove the elderly woman from the car.
He then performed CPR on her on the embankment and, after managing to revive her, continued administering first aid until paramedics arrived.
“My instinct just took over,” he said.
“I knew I had to get in the water to see if anyone was in there. She was like a rag doll when I pulled her out of the car. I will never forget her eyes. I thought she was gone.
“After she went in the ambulance I broke down. It was very emotionally tiring.
“The lady has fully recovered now. I went and knocked on her door. She didn’t recognise me or remember me so I told her: ‘I’m the man who saved your life!’
“We keep in touch now. I would do it all again for definite.”
