A graduate of Aberystwyth and Lampeter universities has been awarded a research scholarship for a doctoral project in language planning.
The University of Wales Trinity Saint David has awarded the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Research Scholarship to Catrin Llwyd, who graduated in Welsh and Politics at Aberystwyth University and also gained a Postgraduate Certificate in Language Policy and Planning from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.
Her research will focus on community language leadership among young people and on aspects of youth work, community development and digital communication.
She will be supervised by Professor Elin Haf Gruffydd Jones, who specialises in the field of minority languages, along with Carys Ifan, director of Canolfan S4C Yr Egin.
Prof Gruffydd Jones, director of the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies at the UWTSD Lampeter campus said: “Catrin will bring extensive experience in language planning to the project, and I look forward to working with her.
“This is an absolutely key area for all minority languages, and we can expect that the results of the research will attract great interest internationally as well as here in Wales.”
Catrin will join a community of researchers and will have access to networks, research training and support throughout the university, including the Institute of Education and Humanities, the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies and the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol.
Catrin said she was “delighted to be offered this opportunity to work on such an innovative scheme”.
She said: “Having worked in the field of the Welsh language and young people for several years, this is an opportunity to contribute research that will further deepen our understanding.
“I would like to thank the university for offering me this special opportunity, and the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol for sponsoring the PhD. “
Gwilym Dyfri Jones, Provost of the Carmarthen and Lampeter Campuses, said: “The subject in question is a key one on many levels and the university is fortunate to have appointed such an experienced and knowledgeable researcher.”
