A Ponterwyd resident has said he is a “prisoner in his own home” because trying to negotiate the busy A44 is putting him and other residents in danger.

Kieran Burling said there were regular problems at a corner on the road, especially if two large lorries met while trying to get around the corner.

In the latest incident outside his home, Mr Burling said a wall at his property was damaged by a motorist who drove off without reporting the damage.

With no pavement alongside the road, Mr Burling, who has hearing aids, said he had been lobbying authorities over safety concerns for a considerable time, but said nothing had been done.

He said: “We’re prisoners in our own home.

“We had what I call a hit-and-run incident when a car hit my wall and smashed the wall up.

“We live on the corner of the A44 in the village, and you can’t see the traffic, and during windy nights I can’t hear the traffic either.

“On that bend there, two lorries can’t pass each other. Every day there are wing mirrors knocked off there.

“I keep asking ‘where are the speed cameras?’ We might see one once a fortnight.

“If I was at the gate when the crash happened, I’d be dead.

“What can we do? Ken Skates, the minister, needs to come here and see for himself what it’s like.

“They won’t even give us a footpath here.

“I spoke to a police officer who said that there’s a need for a pavement here and that everyone in the village should be fighting for it.”

He added: “It’s like trying to cross that road with a blindfold on and without being able to hear anything.”
