LLANDYSUL library could be given a reprieve from closure after a Ceredigion Council Cabinet member said he was “hopeful” a deal could be agreed to keep the facility open.

Closure plans announced by the council sparked a backlash from Llandysul residents, with a local community group fighting to be able to take over the library and run it using volunteers.

But, following talks between the council and the Church of Wales, who lease the council the library premises, Cllr Dafydd Edwards said he thought an agreement could be reached over the lease and with the community group to provide volunteers to run the library.

Protesters again attended a Ceredigion Council Cabinet meeting to show their support for retaining the library, and they heard that Cabinet members will wait to see whether a deal can be struck before making a decision on whether to close the facility.

Cllr Edwards said: “We hope it’ll be possible to keep the library in this location in this building, but to change the lease.

There’s no agreement yet, but there are positive moves. I’m hopeful we can come to an agreement that benefits us and the community.”

Council leader Ellen ap Gwynn said the “good news” that there had been progress had led to Cabinet members agreeing to delay making a decision until further information is available.
