Madam,

I was extremely pleased to read the letter by Max Dobson, a retired geologist living in Aberystwyth, regarding the arguments against the possible burial of nuclear waste along the Cardigan Bay coast, both onshore and offshore (‘Rocks of Wales do not provide a long-term solution’, Letters, 14 March).

The opinion of a genuine expert is invaluable. For those readers who are unaware of the situation, the area from St Davids to the Ll?n Peninsula is being considered by the government as a possible burial site for UK nuclear waste.

The problems we have compared to other areas are these: We have a very low population compared to most areas of England and Wales; we are one of the furthest areas away from English conurbations where loud protests and votes are greatest; neither of the two ruling parties, Labour and Conservative, holds a Parliamentary seat from Cardigan to the tip of Ll?n.

Therefore neither party loses votes or seats here! Therefore, the people of this area must speak up now, loudly and forcibly. Don’t rely on others. Apathy is the killer. People should write to the Press, politicians and county councillors saying no, no, no to the dumping of nuclear waste here.

The problem is that part-time, trivial wind turbines are completely useless for supplying the UK with a reliable winter electricity supply of 60,000 MW. Politicians can see this, which is why they are forced into nuclear energy if they stupidly scrap fossil fuels.

The best answer for UK electricity generation is gas-fired power stations. A new gas-fired station at Pembroke generates 2,000 MW, whilst Wales [population only 3 million] presently uses only 1,850 MW on average.

Wales exports electricity galore to England! England, with its huge 54 million population is the problem, but it is home to millions of NIMBYs, who have votes and therefore power.

There is no hope of burying nuclear waste under the Eocene clay of London, is there? The people of power live there.

Watch out Wales. Wake up and speak up, or be dumped upon, once again.

Yours etc, Lyn Jenkins, Gwbert, Cardigan.
