Nuclear power could return to Trawsfynydd, if plans for a mini nuclear power station go ahead.

A consortium led by Rolls-Royce has earmarked the old nuclear power station near the village as a potential site for one of their new Small Module Reactors (SMR).

Trawsfynydd has been tipped as a possible site because it is still connected to the national grid and has close rail connections.

The project would bring nuclear power back to the area for the first time since the power station, to the north of the village, was decommissioned almost 30 years ago.

A spokesperson for the consortium said: “Our compact power station design could be suitable for any existing UK nuclear licensed sites.

"This makes the best use of the resources we already have in the UK and helps us produce low-carbon electricity to tackle climate change much faster than if we had to identify and develop new sites.”

If the SMR was to be built in Trawsfynydd, it would bring an economic boost to the area with the potential for thousands of jobs.
