Your headline, ’£25m bridge upgrade is the biggest in history’ (Cambrian News North edition, 28 May) is good news for rail users of the Cambrian line, for admirers of the architecture of Barmouth’s beautiful bridge and for those looking forward to using the bridge’s footpath to enjoy the Mawddach trail.
Would however that the plans to build a viaduct access to the bridge for those on foot and on bicycles - the Barmouth Viaduct Access Walkway - were given a start date. This is an important improvement in pedestrian safety when accessing the bridge.
And would that those with the power to do it, agree, in the meantime, to the temporary measure of giving pedestrians sufficent traffic control, in the form of a controlled pedestrian crossing from the pavement side of the A496 to the path to the bridge, to make far safer crossing the main road to the bridge.
This is a bridge with a future. Let us make sure it is as safe as possible to use.
