Your recent article ‘Call for county council to work mostly in Welsh’ made by Jeff Smith, chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith, in a letter to county council leader Ellen ap Gwynne is to me one of the most ridiculous demands ever made on the existing ‘bilingual’ Ceredigion County Council, serving a large majority of non-Welsh-speaking residents – a majority being high council tax-paying residents.

It is good to be able to speak the language of your country if you so choose - made easier if you have Welsh-speaking parents and family, however for Jeff Smith to make a comparison between Ceredigion council and the National Library of Wales working only through Welsh, again is a ridiculous comparison and demand - the National Library of Wales being a wonderful archive for collecting and preserving Welsh history and culture, whereas the council is a statutory body to serve all residents on many of life’s demands in a comprehensible manner to those it serves.

Cymdeithas yr Iaith setting dates for the council to work mainly in Welsh is underestimating the council leader’s astuteness in her role of knowing that the qualifications and experience of those employed by the council and the ability to communicate with most, if not all, council tax payers in the language most understood by all is a must for a priority in serving its residents.
