CROWDS gathered on the banks of the Mawddach on Friday to mark the 50th anniversary of one of Britain’s worst river tragedies.

Wreaths were laid and a religious service held in the open air within yards of the river Mawddach at Penmaenpool where 15 perished, including four children in 1966.

The pleasure boat Prince of Wales, carrying 42 passengers, sank when it hit the wooden toll bridge.

The commemoration, in which a plaque was unveiled, had been organised by Dolgellau Town Council.
