A ROAD at the back of Penglais School is closed for five days while work on a new pedestrian crossing takes place.

Ceredigion County Council has confirmed the work is being carried out near the Brynamlwg Club on Cefn Llan Hill during the half-term holiday.

The crossing will be a raised traffic-calming crossing similar to two others on the road and is intended to improve road safety for pupils walking to and from school.

Double yellow lines on the road have failed to deter many parents from stopping to drop off and pick up children.

While a section of road on either side of the new crossing will be closed until 30 October, the rest of Cefn Llan will remain open to traffic.

A council spokesperson said: “Ceredigion County Council was successfully awarded grant funding from the Welsh Government’s Safe Routes in Communities Scheme 2015-16 to install a new crossing at the rear of Penglais School on Cefn Llan.

“This will be a raised table type crossing, incorporating a build-out that reduces the crossing distance and also introduces a priority system for traffic.

“This additional traffic calming measure is being installed in response to road safety concerns raised by the school.

“The crossing will help provide a Safe Route to School for pupils at Penglais and is also aimed at encouraging increased Active Travel journeys to and from the school, thus reducing the number of vehicle movements in the area.”
