Tributes have come in from a former Welsh rugby international and locals for a stalwart of Aberaeron RFC who has stepped down from his role as secretary after an astonishing 40 years at the helm.
Glyndwr Evans took over the post – initially only for a short period – in 1978, just a year after the club’s formation.
The former full-back has since fulfilled a number of different roles – in addition to running the clubhouse, he has also been groundsman, grass-cutter, barman, linesman, minibus driver and odd job man.
He remains a key figure at the club, currently helping to develop the facilities, including expanding the second rugby pitch.
In a speech during a presentation marking Mr Evans’s four decades of service, committee man Alun Rees said: “They don’t make people like Glyndwr anymore - Aberaeron RFC will not see his likes again.”
Paying tribute to Mr Evans, former Wales international Dafydd Jones said: “From my very first memory at Aberaeron rugby club, Glyndwr was and still is until this very day at the forefront of everything good at this great club.
“Personally, I will always be in debt to Glyndwr and only have great memories on the pitch, but even better off it!
“He has sacrificed his whole life to this rugby club and the daily running of it. From the junior section all the way through to the first team.
“All past players of my generation associated with Aberaeron rugby club all feel exactly the same and some of our away games are still massive highlights of my career.
“He is truly a one-off who has done absolutely everything in his power to make sure this club is what it is today."
