I wish to comment on the recent decision by the county council to reject the proposed poultry unit at T? Nant, outside Talybont.

Our neighbouring council of Powys has allowed a number of these giant chicken production plants, despite enormous opposition from the public and the observations of Cllr Emily Durrant (Green, Llangors on Powys) who pointed out negative environmental aspects of such units such as high nitrogen levels and odours that local people have had to suffer.

Other concerns include traffic levels, the importation of feed products and animal welfare concerns. It is my belief that people should be asked to pay extra for meat and that meat should be reared in a free-range environment.

If there is one aspect of this application that gives me even more cause for concern, it was the way it was dealt with by the council. The formal reason given for the application to be rejected was “lack of information”. This leads me to believe that if the proposers came back and said “you asked for information here is it”, the council would overturn that original decision.

If the proposal had been rejected on environmental and animal welfare concerns that would have explained the rejection in terms that people would understand and therefore I would ask those who formally objected to remind their local councillors of their objections until the proposers state that they are withdrawing the plans completely.
