RURAL communities across Dwyfor and Meirionnydd will soon be able to access the internet at any time for free.

Work is underway with communities across the region to establish networks that will enable them to offer free wifi to the public.

Nefyn, Harlech, Ffestiniog, Penygroes, and Beddgelert will be the first towns to trail the digital scheme.

Gwynedd Council has successfully secured funding through the Rural Communities Development Fund to develop the Digital Gwynedd project: Public Access to Wi-Fi in Rural Communities.

As a result of the Superfast Wales programme, broadband is now available to over 80 per cent of homes and businesses throughout Gwynedd, and this scheme could offer a great opportunity to use the infrastructure to benefit Gwynedd’s individuals and businesses.

An initial call to promote the project and recruit interested communities opened in April 2018.

Since then seven communities have started the process of establishing a wireless system in their communities, but the council still wants to hear from communities which could benefit.
