AN ABERDYFI councillor has welcomed the “absolutely fantastic” news that a new safe cycling route may be introduced in south Meirionnydd.

Next Thursday (14 September) the public has been invited to view new ‘active travel’ schemes across Gwynedd, with one proposal indicating a cyclepath linking Aberdyfi and Tywyn.

Aberdyfi councillor Bob Tyrrell welcomed the consultation and sincerely hopes the initiative will come to fruition.

“I think it’s a fantastic scheme and hope people back it,” he said.

“I think it’s important for residents living in Tywyn and Aberdyfi but also for children in the area, it’ll be great for them to be able to travel safely between the two communities.

“At the moment, it’s just not safe because of traffic and other factors."

When asked about the potential link, a Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “The council has launched a county wide public consultation on active travel which aims to find what the public’s opinion is on the integrated network maps for walkers and cyclists in Gwynedd. The consultation is open until 20 September 2017.

“As part of this county-wide consultation, and following local interest in the matter, the council will be holding an information session at Tywyn where members of the public can see plans for the walking and cycling infrastructure in the area.”

More information is available on the council’s website www.gwynedd.llyw.cymru/activetravel

The consultation in Tywyn will take place in Tywyn library between 2.30 pm until 6pm.See this week's north editions for the full story, in shops and online now
