Concerns have been raised about the safety of Machynlleth pupils, after 20mph warning signs outside the town’s school have failed to come on at the right time since the clocks went back.

Flashing speed warning signs outside Machynlleth’s Ysgol Bro Hyddgen imposing a temporary 20mph speed limit at school pick-up and drop-off times have been coming on an hour early and failing to come on at the crucial busy times when the school’s 500 pupils are coming to and from the building.

Local councillor Michael Williams said he had been approached by parents who had raised concerns that the reduced 20mph limit and flashing sign were coming on at the wrong time.

The Welsh Government said a “technical issue” led to the lights not being updated, and said that the issue would be resolved sometime this week.

The problem occurred across towns and villages in Powys which have the lights on trunk roads outside schools. As they are located on the trunk road, the Welsh Government is responsible for them.

A spokesperson said: “A technical issue led to an error with the timings. We are in contact with the manufacturer and are in the process of updating the signs. The issue should be resolved imminently.”
