THE FUTURE of the oldest club in Wales has been cast into doubt following the sale of a prominent building block in the centre of Aberystwyth.

The St David’s Club has been based on the first floor of the building on the corner of Eastgate and Pier Street for over 100 years.

But there are now question marks over its lease following the sale of the building which is also home on the ground-floor to a range of well-know businesses including The Cabin cafe, clothing store Animal, Dots and Number 21 florist.

The building was put up for sale for almost £400,000 in February this year with estate agent Jim Raw-Rees.

It is not known who the buyer is or what the plans for the building are, but the sale of the building comes with the condition of the continuation of existing leases for the four ground-floor businesses.

The St David’s Club lease is currently in ‘presumed holding over’ status, with no lease term in place. The club currently pays £4,500 a year for the upper floors of the building, including a steward’s flat.

St David’s Club committee members could not be contacted for a comment.
