A GROUP which raised tens of thousands of pounds to save a failed pub has received national recognition at an awards show.
Earlier this year the Tafarn yr Heliwr/Sportsman Committee ran an astonishing campaign to raise enough money to buy a defunct pub in a bid to “breathe new life into the community”.
Their efforts have now been recognised by a national awards ceremony.
Bleddyn Evans is pictured behind the bar during the opening day listening to what people were suggesting to do with the building now.
The committee raised a massive £82,000 through selling stakes to purchase the Nefyn High Street pub which had been closed for nearly a decade.
Recently, the group were invited to London to take part in the Plunkett Rural Community Ownership Awards, an “annual celebration of the achievements of rural community businesses in tackling rural issues across the UK”.
The group did not win their “Best Community story of the year” award but were delighted to nominated in the first place.
“We were shortlisted as we were able to organise a community meeting and committee, register with FCA, work with Wales co-op to set up the share offer, sell shares and purchase the building in less than a year,” said Bleddyn Evans, chair of Tafarn yr Heliwr Cyf.
