A 1992 comedy musical hit film will get the Aberystwyth treatment this week as pupils and staff from Penglais School perform Sister Act.

The school has been incredibly busy over the last few months in the run up to their now annual production.

Following on from the successes of recent years such as Ella Hickson’s Wendy and Peter Pan and Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, the school will now be performing its take on the divine musical comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg.

Performances will be held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 21 to 23 November.

With music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater and book by Bill and Cheri Steinkellner, the story follows Deloris Van Cartier, a performer trying to make it big in the real world, who witnesses a murder and is placed in protective custody somewhere that cops are certain she won’t be found: a convent!

With no choice in the matter, she finds herself living life as a nun with the sisters and the uptight Mother Superior of the Queen of Angels church.

Taking on the out-of-tune church choir, Deloris saves the crumbling church, but in doing so gives away her position to the very person she’s hiding from – her boyfriend, Curtis – and must now stop him with her new-found sisters.

With direction by Barrie Stott, musical direction by Phil Budd and Carys Davies, and choreography by Year 12 student Ilona Hoffmann, this promises to be a production you will not want to miss.

Performances start at 7pm in the school’s main hall and doors open at 6.45pm.
