OVER 1,000 salmon, sea trout and brown trout are feared to have been killed in a major pollution incident in the River Teifi between Tregaron and Lampeter over the weekend.

Dog walkers and anglers reported seeing scores of dead fish following reports of discolouration in the water.

Environmental health officials who say they have traced the source of the pollution to a farm in the Tregaron area are now trying to assess how the pollution happened as well as seeking to establish its full impact.

“I walked two miles along the river on Saturday and it was a scene of devastation,” one fisherman, who did not wish to be named, told the Cambrian News.

“I have fished since the age of 10 and never seen anything like this.

“In one place there must have been around 40 dead fish in an area just six foot square."

NRW confirmed in a statement that they had mounted an investigation.

“NRW officers have been to the river and identified the likely source as being from an agricultural site in the Tregaron area,” they said.

“At least 200 fish have been killed, although it’s likely to be more. Work continues to assess the extent of the impact and investigate the cause of the incident.

“Pollution control measures such as bunds are in place to reduce the impact on the river and wildlife.”
