Madam,

I note with great interest that the artist Robert Davies is making an appeal against the decision to refuse planning permission for a metal sculpture on Borth beach. While this issue remains a controversial one, I am glad he has not given up after all the work he has done to try and secure planning permission.

I think this is very courageous of him. The deadline of Thursday, 26 April, for appeals to the Welsh Planning Inspectorate has now passed. They will make the final decision as an independent body.

I fully respect the concerns of the residents of Borth regarding the idea of a metal tree sculpture being erected on the beach at Borth, approximately 600 metres from the line with the Youth Hostel. It is, after all, their coastal village and they are the ones who will probably view it every day.

In these days of full transparency and democracy, it is important to take’s view into account to come to the right decision. I would, however, just like to point out the positive benefits of such a structure.

They are: a focus point to educate the young on the historical significance of the ancient submerged forest and the legend of Cantre’r Gwaelod; a representation to highlight climate change and rising sea levels; a boost to the local economy in terms of increased trade for businesses; and a chance to put Borth on the map with the inevitable media interest. I sincerely hope the planning permission appeal is successful.

Yours etc,

William R Johnson, Clos Llety Gwyn, Llanbadarn Fawr, Aberystwyth.
