How lucky I am to be living at the north end of Borth, where a beautiful, sparsely populated beach is right in front of me. All the more so in this time of great crisis. Solitary contemplation of the universal natural elements elevates the soul, generates a crucial broader spiritual perspective, that feels vital if we are not to descend into despair. And the coastal landscape really does look magnificent.

Yet of course my feelings are clouded by the continuing threat of conceptual artist Rob Davies imposing his 30-foot metal ‘Tree’ sculpture on the beach. The character of the beach would be completely transformed by turning it into conceptual art installation space. A 30-foot sculpture would dominate the surrounding environment.

A thousand and one people have suggested that Mr Davies relocate his sculpture somewhere more acceptable, yet Mr Davies is adamant that he must have our beach for his self-expression. By ‘our beach’ I do not mean just Borth residents. The beach belongs to nature, which includes all humanity, for each to enjoy in their own way, without imposing on others. Long may it remain like that.
