THREE unexploded Second World War bombs had to be detonated by bomb disposal experts after being found on Ynyslas Beach.

Borth Coastguard Rescue Team were called to the beach at 2.18pm on Tuesday, 30 January, by a member of the public who spotted one of the bombs towards the end of the groynes.

The team made their way to the scene, and after locating the bomb, found another two “items of suspected ordnance”.

The team set up a safety cordon to prevent the public from entering the area while investigations were carried out.

The Coastguard Team said: “Photographs were forwarded on to the Explosives Ordnance Disposal Unit, who were able to confirm all three items were unexploded bombs.”

The Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit arrived on the scene on Wednesday at around 1pm, carrying out controlled explosions of the bombs at just before 3pm.

Borth Coastguard Rescue Team were on hand to make the area safe while experts disposed of the bombs.

The finding and disposal of explosives at Ynyslas beach is a regular occurrence due to the area’s history as a missile testing range during the Second World War.
