The fire service said crews from Borth and Aberystwyth responded at 5.57pm. One female had been freed prior to the arrival of the fire service, and firefighters safely removed a woman from one of the vehicles using cutting equipment, and assisted a man from a second vehicle.
The crews gave first aid until the arrival of the ambulances. Both were taken to hospital by road ambulance.
The Wales Air Ambulance and police also attended. Police did not reopen the road until just before midnight and are appealing for witnesses.
