The Shadow Secretary of State for Wales has paid a visit to Harlech to tackle the world’s steepest street, Ffordd Pen Llech.

Chris Rees was joined by local Labour Party member Sarah Badham – who helped secure Record Status for the street - and prospective Labour candidate Graham Hogg on a sunny Thursday afternoon last week to climb the 38 per cent incline.

This is the second time Chris has visited a record-breaking street, having walked up Baldwin Street in New Zealand, the incline which held the previous title.

Chris said: “Baldwin Street is straighter, but our Harlech street is twistier, older, prettier and definitely steeper.

“I am so proud of Sarah’s work in bringing this prize to Wales. We even had people stop us asking to be photographed holding the World Record Certificate.”

Sarah explained that she is keen for the council to replace the 40 per cent incline road sign with the exact correct percentage of 37.45 per cent.

“It will be a unique sign and a great place for visitors to stop and take a photo, just like the directional signs at Lands End,” she said.

Graham Hogg noted the huge amount of civic pride in Harlech, and the fact that many local residents were active in promoting their local community.

“Sarah is a fantastic example of that,” he said.

“She was brought up in Harlech and wants the town to do well.

“I think the efforts of Sarah and the team in getting World Record status will pay huge dividends for business and local employment as it adds to the town’s visitor pulling power.”
