A RUGBY coach made a fascinating discovery during a morning jog along the Llyn coast on Tuesday.

Ian D Ll Jones, the coach of Pwllheli RFC, recent winners of Division One North, was running between Pwllheli and Abererch when he saw a flock of black gulls swarming around something.

Assuming it was one of the barrel jellyfish that have been spotted on beaches across Dwyfor and Meirionnydd, Ian was shocked to discover he had actually found a four-foot shark washed up dead on the beach.

“It surprised me, you don’t often see sharks washed ashore like this,” he told the Cambrian News.

“I’m quite au fait with things like this and thought it was a large dog fish, having checked online though it definitely isn’t, it’s a shark.

“I saw another smaller one just a mile or so down the shore - seeing two was definitely unusual.

“They can’t have been there very long though, as the bigger one had been torn to shreds by the birds by the time I got back, those black gulls are big birds.

Ian has his theories about why there were unusual sea creatures washing up on the Llyn shoreline.

He continued: “It has to be global warming doesn’t it? I’ve not seen anything like it during my time here. Something is having a big effect somewhere.”
