MACHYNLLETH councillors have called for urgent action to bring up to scratch a “disgraceful” building in the town.

Councillors labelled the state of the British Telecom telephone exchange building in Tregarth as “shocking” and “filthy” and said it had been left in a dilapidated state for several years.

The issue was raised at a town council meeting last week, with councillors agreeing to write to BT in a bid to get something done.

BT has said that a site visit will now be undertaken by maintenance teams after being told of the problems by the Cambrian News.

Cllr Michael Williams said the building, the former home of the manned exchanges in Machynlleth, is in a “shocking condition” and that “urgent upkeep was required”.

“BT needs to do some upkeep of this building to make it respectable again, I have had so many complaints from residents,” Cllr Williams said.

“There has been no maintenance at all for years and it needs a good renovation and a coat of paint.

“At the moment it is an absolute disgrace and is filthy.”
