A shop owner has raised safety fears over a new bus station on Porthmadog High Street.

Work is taking place to widen the road and provide space for four bus stops.

This has led to fears traffic will flow faster along the newly widened road, posing a potential safety hazard for passengers getting on and off buses and for pedestrians crossing the road.

The shop owner, who did not want to be named, also claimed the town was losing much-needed parking to make way for the new station.

The local businessperson said: “The main concern is that bus bays will be placed half on and half off the pavement, widening the road and allowing cars to continue at speed.

“This immediately raises concerns with regards to public safety, especially as the park entrance is there in the middle of the bus stop.

“I fear that children and adults will be tempted to cross in between the bollards and in front of parked buses, not seeing clearly any traffic coming their way and an accident will happen, be assured.

“No one is going to bother walking a few hundred yards to the nearest pedestrian crossing when what they require is straight across the road to them. It’s not practical.”

A Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “The new bus stop layout has been designed in accordance with the latest industry guidance with a road safety audit carried out as part of the design process.

“Drawings of the changes were sent to the town council, local member and all affected businesses in the area in December 2019 for comment.”

They also discussed putting in another exit and putting a fence in front of the entrance to “deter” children from running out into the road, but these are yet to be confirmed.
