One of Aberystwyth’s most stately buildings will be lit up in purple today - International Women’s Day - in solidarity with the 5,000 Ceredigion women born in the 1950s who have lost up to six years of their state pension due to changes in the law.
Members of Ceredigion WASPI – Women Against State Pension Injustice –will hold a candle-lit vigil outside the illuminated public library at the Old Town Hall on Queen’s Road from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
“Our leaflets explain how women can register a maladministration complaint about the lack of notice they received about this major change to their financial situation,” said Ceri Jones from Aberystwyth WASPI.
“In the past few months hundreds of Ceredigion women have complained and may eventually receive compensation.
"We have paid National Insurance contributions throughout our working lives, only to find that the pension we paid for isn’t there.
“This is a good opportunity for women in Aberystwyth to find out about the campaign and what they can do to make their voices heard.”
Ceredigion MP Ben Lake will be joining the WASPI members on the vigil.
Elsewhere in the county other WASPI members will be holding an information and recruitment stall in the Lampeter Sainsbury’s store on Market Street from 10am to 4pm.
Others will be handing out leaflets outside Cardigan’s Guildhall from 12.30pm to 1pm.
