A NEW Quay town councillor has taken it upon himself to paint the steps of the town’s historic pier white having grown “sick and tired” of waiting for Ceredigion County Council to do the job.

For the past five years, Cllr Dan Potter has been campaigning to have the pier steps restored to how they were at the turn of the 20th century.

Having become frustrated at what he perceived as a lack of action, the New Quay lifeboat coxswain was recently among a “gang of four” who spent 10 days painting the steps early each morning.

“I’ve been trying to get this done for the past five years and just had no luck whatsoever,” Cllr Potter told the Cambrian News.

“In the end, I simply decided to get off my backside and do something about it.”

He tackled the impromptu project accompanied by partner, Rosie Jones, and pals Al Davis and Glyn Oliver.

Cllr Potter conceded that reaction to the quartet’s efforts had been mixed. “Not everyone is happy with it,” he admitted.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: “What Daniel doesn’t seem to have taken on board is that the pier is a Grade II-listed structure – you can’t just have any Tom, Dick or Harry rushing over there wielding a paint brush."
