OVER £700 has been raised by two Porthmadog sisters after they shaved their heads to raise funds for a cancer charity.

Dawn-Louise Jones, 40, and her sister Corina Jones, 37, took on Macmillan Cancer Support’s Brave the Shave challenge over the weekend at Porthmadog Football Club.

The sisters have so far raised over £700 to thank the charity for their support since their father, Colin Birks, 70, was diagnosed with terminal cancer last year.

Dawn told the Cambrian News that she cannot thank the cancer charity enough for the support they have provided during this difficult time.

She said: “Cancer affects so many people’s lives and when my dad was first diagnosed he was told he only had three months to live but thankfully he is still with us.

“He opted to go through 13 rounds of radiotherapy to help prolong his life and luckily he is still with us, but he is declining quickly.”

The mother-of-six said she was extremely nervous about taking part in the big shave, but with the support from her family she found the courage to go through with it.

She said: “I have always liked my hair; everyone who knows me knows I love having different hair styles so this is a really big deal for me.

“But my hair will grow back and so will my sisters and that can’t be said for chemo patients who are going through treatment.

“We have so far raised £700 but we still have donations coming in so we are not sure of the final amount as of yet. I’d like to thank everyone who came down to support us and all the businesses who have donated to the cause.”

Mr Birks, known locally as ‘Billy Seagull’, who worked for over 20 years at Porthmadog Skip Hire, also shaved off all his hair the following day so he could match his daughters.
