Fundraisers who are marking an Aberystwyth Town football legend’s 70th birthday have broken the £10,000 mark ahead of a special auction that will see some great items up for grabs.

On what would be the 70th birthday of David Williams, widely acknowledged as Aberystwyth Town’s greatest ever player, his widow Marjorie and sons Owain and Sion, along with supporters decided they wanted to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

David Williams, known as Dias after a famous Brazilian player, passed away in 1988 following a battle with cancer, with the fundraisers already completing a 70-mile walk between clubs that Dias played for.

Their fundraising efforts have paid off after it emerged that they have already beaten the £10,000 mark with John Meredith, one of the fundraisers, saying that everyone was “very pleased” to have received so much support.

Donations are still being taken with a JustGiving fundraising page available, and John said a special auction with a host of items will be taking place at Llety Parc on Friday, 3 May.

The event, which will see a sit down event with a buffet, will see items including a Welsh shirt signed by two of the country’s greatest ever number 11s - Gareth Bale and Ryan Giggs.

Anyone who would like to lodge any bids or get information about attending the event can email John at [email protected].
