Another successful speed shear competition was held at Plas Coch, Bala on Sunday, 26 May, with the marquee full to the brim.

Junior, senior and open classes were held including a team event, hitting a nail and shearing one sheep bringing a bit of light entertainment to the event. The main events attracted shearers from all over north Wales and beyond, with the open winner winning a handpiece donated by Horner Shearing.

“It’s been a great afternoon, many competitors turned out to shear and many more turned out to support,” said Elen Parry, Plas Coch licensee.

“I am grateful to everyone who has helped and supported us to hold the event.”

With some of the prize money being sponsored by Laurence Pierce Wool Merchants, Rhuthin, Rhydian Edwards from Melin y Wig won the junior class in 46.91 seconds.

Guto Hughes, Sportmans, was on a high after a successful evening in Rhuthin Speed Shear, winning the senior competition in 28.30 seconds with only a second between him and third-placed competitor Meirion Evans, of Machynlleth, and Ellis Evans, Corwen, in second place in 28.77 seconds.

Nick Grives, of Staffordshire and a newcomer to the Plas Coch Speed Shear, smashed the open final in 21.11 seconds, with Gareth Evans, Llansannan, coming second in 22.46 seconds and Iwan Morris, a local lad and one of the organisers, third in 26.82 seconds under the watchful eyes of the judges, Alwyn Manzini; Med Evans, Grugor; and Mathew Hot Dog Evans, Gower; with Dilwyn Pierce the perfect compere.
