An Aberystwyth county councillor has written to BT to complain at the “disgraceful” state of town phone boxes.

Despite the amount of phone boxes reducing due to lack of use and BT encouraging communities to take over unused ones for ventures such as defibrillators and miniature libraries, three BT phone boxes remain in Aberystwyth town centre.

Cllr Ceredig Davies said that the two kiosks on Glynd?r Square and one on the corner of Bath Street and Terrace Road are in “poor condition”, and wrote to the company in a bid to get the issue rectified.

“They are covered in green algae with accumulated dirt under foot,” Cllr Davies said in his letter to BT.

“The advertisements on them appear to be changed on a regular basis but the kiosks are never cleaned.

“One kiosk is out of operation as the receiver has been smashed, another is just rusty and dirty, while the third has a difficult door to open and the glass has painted graffiti.

“All three of these kiosks are in prime position in Aberystwyth but unfortunately they are a disgrace, reflecting badly on us as a town and BT as a company.”

Cllr Davies asked the company if they were aware of the condition of the phone boxes and whether plans are in place to “give them a good clean and have the one fully operational”.

A BT spokesperson said: “We’re grateful to the councillor for bringing this to our attention. This has now been reported and our maintenance team will be sent to look at the kiosks as quickly as possible.
